Exactech Reveals AI, Radiomics Research for Shoulder Arthroplasty

Exactech has presented new research that touts the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and radiomic analyses for shoulder arthroplasty. The company also showcased advances within its Active Intelligence ecosystem of smart technologies.
 
The presentations were made at the 35th Congress of International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) in Nashville, Tenn.
 
The new research showed how machine learning techniques like clustering can aggregate CT image-derived radiomic data with patient demographic data to identify clinically relevant muscle classifications that predict clinical outcomes after shoulder replacement. The first study analyzed deltoid radiomics from CT scans of 1,382 patients to identify five distinct deltoid clusters associated with both high and low levels of motion, before and after shoulder arthroplasty.
 
Exactech said this technique can be performed on other muscles, as well as bone, to synthesize complex image data in a way that clinicians can readily interpret through pre-op planning software.
 
Two further radiomic studies quantified the 3D deltoid morphology and correlated the radiomic data to clinically relevant thresholds for clinical improvement. The studies identified the specific radiomic measures statistically related to improved outcomes after shoulder arthroplasty. Exactech said this information can be useful to develop future clinical decision support tools.
 
The company also highlighted developments in its knee and ankle surgical technologies. This included easy adoption of Newton knee balancing technology and the accuracy of GPS for total ankle arthroplasty.1
